Can the Bible Be Understood # 2? Convince a person that the Bible is a book that cannot be understood and it might as well be burned. Why not? If it can’t be understood, then it must be branded as being one hundred percent useless. However, one that believes the Bible is a book given by God, a book that can be understood by man, must take it serious and value it and what it can do for them. This article will continue presenting supporting evidence that the Bible is a book that can indeed be understood by mankind. God states in I John 3:4 that sin is transgression of His law. Therefore, if we can’t understand the scriptures, then God has demanded of us many impossible things. Please consider the following scriptures and decide for yourself whether or not God would do such a thing. People are demanded to rebuke those who trespass (or sin) against us and to forgive them if they repent of that sin (Luke 17:3-4). Matthew 18:15 says we are to talk with those who have sinned against us. Galatians 6:1 states that we are to restore those who sin. James 5:16 and I John1:9 both require people to confess their sins. I Timothy 5:20 says that the minister is to rebuke before all, the sins committed by members of the congregation. The elders of the church are demanded to withdraw fellowship from those who sin and refuse to repent (Matthew 18:15-17, I Corinthians 5:11, and II Thessalonians 3:6). People, as individual members of God’s family are demanded to have no company or fellowship with other members who have sinned and will not repent (I Corinthinians 5:10-12 and II Thessalonians 3:14). I Timothy 5:22 states that we are not to be partakers of other men’s sins. Romans 6:15 relates that children of God are to turn away from sin. You see, if sin is transgression of God’s law, then the previous scriptures certainly prove that God has demanded of people the impossible. Why? Because if we cannot understand "God’s law: then it necessarily follows that we cannot know when another person has sinned as well. No, we cannot conclude that others have transgressed what is taught in a particular passage of scripture if neither they nor we understand it. Then, too, if the Bible is a book that cannot be understood there are many other scriptures (addressing different subjects) that also sho God has demanded the impossible. It is true that God demands of His people to speak the same thing, that there be no divisions (I Corinthians 1:10). He goes on even asks a rather pointed question, "…is Christ divided?" (I Corinthians 1:13) If the Bible can’t be understood, how could people possible all speak the same thing and avoid needless divisions. Also God dmeands that we offer no assistance to those teaching doctrine that is not in harmony with what was taught by Christ (II John 9-11). If the teaching of Jesus, as found recorded in the New Testament cannot be understood, this become even another impossible demand placed upon the people of the world. How shall people without understanding, separate the teachings of Christ from those of man? In Colossians 1:28 God through the Apostle Paul says, he has given us all his teachings through Jesus. Then in Colossians 2:21-23 we are commanded, "(Touch not; taste not; handle not; which all are to perish with the using;) after the commandments and doctrines of men? Which things have indeed a shew of wisdom in will-worship, and humility, and neglecting of the body; not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh. Ask yourslef, if the teachings of Christ, as recorded in the New Testament, cannot be understood, then is it possible for us to comply with this demand? Obviously the answer to such a question would be no, and a thousand times no. Those that believe in God, certainly believe in the Bible and cannot believe that God has demanded of His people the impossible. Therefore, in light of what has been covered in this lesson, it seems reasonable to believe that God has given mankind a book that can indeed be understood. |
