Can the Bible Be Understood # 1?

Wouldn’t it be a great tragedy if the contents of the Bible were presented in a manner or at a level of understanding so great that it would be virtually impossible for mankind to comprehend? The purpose of this lesson will be to prove that God has truly given man a book that can be understood by all.

First of all we must accept the fact that God is all knowing. So, if the Bible is a book that cannot be understood by all people, it would necessarily follow that either God was aware of that (therefore condemning some by making it impossible for them to obey) or he made a mistake and over-estimated the abilities of the very people he created. Both of these assumptions are false, therefore, the words must be within the range of man’s comprehension.

Then, too, we know that with God nothing is impossible. He could’ve easily written a book way over the heads of all people, yet he did not. Why didn’t he? One has to assume that if God gave us this law, He felt that we should be able to understand it. If he had given us a law that was incomprehensible, then he is not a God of love and mercy.

God selected a group of men and charged them with the responsibility to teach the message of the Bible to every creature in the world. Now keep in mind that He placed this responsibility upon them, knowing that they would have to make many sacrifices and suffer many hardships. In fact He knew many of them would even be put to death. Tradition has it, that all the apostles were put to death except John.

Would this have been fair of God to give men a book to teach that he knew nobody was capable of understanding and that the very people teaching that book would have such serious consequences levied upon their lives? It appears that if that were the case, God would’ve been a very cruel, mean, and selfish God. All know that this isn’t the case.

If the Bible is a book that cannot be understood then it makes many false claims for itself. John 17:17 says that the word of God is truth. Then John 8:32 states that knowledge of the truth (word of God) will make people free. John 20:30-31 and Romans 10:13-17 say that one may become a believer by reading or hearing the written word of God.

It is recorded in II Timothy 3:14-15 that the holy scriptures are able to make us wise unto salvation. Acts 17:10-12 says knowledge of the scriptures will enable us to discern between the true and false teachers. Romans 1:15-17 says the word of God is His power of salvation. Acts 20:32 states that the word of god is able to build us up and give us an inheritance.

We also read in Matthew 7:24 that by hearing and doing the teachings of Jesus (or the teachings within the New Testament) it will result in our becoming like unto a wise man who built his house upon a rock. James 1:21 states the word of God is able to save our souls. James records for us in James 1:25 the following words, "But whoso looketh into the perfect law of liberty and continueth therein, he being not a forgetful hearer, but a doer of the work, this man shall be blessed in his deed."

John 6:45 says hearing and learning the word of God will enable people to come unto Jesus. Paul in II Timothy 2:2 said to the young preacher, Timothy, "And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men who shall be able to teach others also."

The bible claims to be capable of doing all these things, however, if it is a book that people are unable to understand, then these claims must indeed be false. However, those of us that believe the Bible is a book given by God know that there are no false claims to be found within it. Therefore the passages considered within this article serve to assure us that God has given us a great and wonderful book that all people can indeed understand.
